By law, education settings must support pupils with special educational needs and disabilites (SEND). The process for SEND support is known as the Graduated Approach.
There are 4 steps to follow, that should be repeated as an on-going cycle:
- Assess – Understanding what needs you have
- Plan – Agreeing what support they will give you, how often and who will be responsible for it.
- Do – The plan is followed and the agreed support is provided to you
- Review – Check if the plan is working by looking at your progress (at least three times per year)and asking for your thoughts and feedback.
What types of support might be available?
Support can be given in lots of different ways. Here are some examples of what might be offered to you:
- extra help from a teacher or a learning support assistant
- making or changing the materials and equipment you use
- working in small groups
- help to join in with class activities
- help to work or socialise with other pupils
- help with any physical or personal care needs
- one-to-one help with some tasks
- safe space to use if you feel overwhelmed
- instructions and information given to you in the way you prefer
What if the support isn't helping?
If you think that you might need more SEND support than you are already getting, you could:
- Speak to a teacher or trusted member of staff,to ask how they can help you further
- Think about an
EHC needs assessment.
You could ask a parent or trusted adult to help you to have these conversations and attend meetings with you if this would be helpful. You can also
